‹ 10 / 29 Chapter 10
Evelyn Sinclair signed the divorce agreement. Three years and four days after she donated part of her liver to Adrian Sterling. The reason was simple. Adrian's unattainable love, Isabella Laurent, had returned. And she brought a child who looked exactly like him. ...... The sheets lay tangled on the floor. Evelyn curled into the corner of the bed, clutching the blanket around her. Despite the warmth in the room, she felt chilled to the bone. Moments ago, she had endured something closer to humiliation than intimacy. Adrian had been rough, leaving dark bruises across her skin. "This time... you initiated it, didn't you?" Her voice trembled. His fingers paused on his shirt buttons. A mocking smile curled his lips. "Does it matter? You always seemed to enjoy it." He leaned down, teeth grazing her earlobe, her delicate scent filling his senses. "It hurts..." Evelyn bit her lip hard. This was only the second time they'd shared a bed in three years of marriage. "I don't like this." Her voice was ice. Adrian gripped her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. "Playing the prude now?" He sneered. "You've already borne my child—though that bastard died." Her heart twisted violently. That child... had been his. But because he didn't love her, even the death of their baby was just a passing remark. "Isabella is back," Adrian said abruptly. "She gave me a son." A rare softness flickered in his eyes. Evelyn felt as if she'd been struck by lightning. She'd known Isabella had returned. For two months, that woman had sent her daily messages designed to wound. [Look at our son. Doesn't he resemble Adrian?] [You shameless homewrecker, stealing my place.] Each word had been a knife to her heart. "Let's divorce." Adrian tossed a document at her. "You'll get everything you're owed." Evelyn stepped onto the carpet, her legs unsteady. She picked up the pen, her smile bitter. "Fine. I'll sign." Adrian's expression darkened. "So eager? Rushing to your next man?" "Compared to you keeping your mistress in a villa, what am I?" Her pen hovered. "Transfer the money by tomorrow. Nine a.m. at the courthouse." After signing, she looked up. "Starting today, I take back every kindness I ever showed you." An inexplicable pang shot through Adrian. "Don't forget," he said coldly, "clause three of the agreement—you're forbidden to fall in love with me." Evelyn clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms. As Adrian walked away, she finally collapsed onto the floor. Three years ago, she'd saved Adrian when he was gravely injured. To help him rebuild his empire, she'd quietly leveraged her connections, making him a business titan in just three years. Yet none of it could compete with one glance from his unattainable love. ...... At eight the next morning, Evelyn received a bank notification. Two hundred million—the price of her three wasted years. She stood outside the courthouse with her suitcase. Adrian was already waiting, as devastatingly handsome as ever in the morning light. "You can keep the villa," he offered. Evelyn walked past him. "No need." Ten minutes later, she tossed the divorce certificate into the trash and left without looking back. Adrian watched her go, his gaze darkening. He didn't understand. She was the one who'd loved another, so why did it feel like he'd wronged her? ...... Evelyn wandered aimlessly through the streets. A red sports car pulled up beside her. "Miss Sinclair." The window lowered, revealing Maxwell Carter's concerned face. "The chairman sent me to bring you home." Tears pricked her eyes. After three years, she was finally going home. As the car sped away, it passed Adrian's vehicle. Adrian narrowed his eyes. The red-eyed woman in the passenger seat was unmistakably his newly divorced wife. "Heh." He smirked. "Found your next man already?" But who... exactly was that man?
